Woman, Behold Your Son

Have you ever wondered why Christ said “Woman, behold your son” while He was on the cross? When Jesus said, “Woman, behold your son” (John 19:26), he was addressing his mother. Standing near her was the disciple John, whom Jesus loved. Jesus’ words were intended to establish a new relationship between his mother and the disciple John, entrusting Mary into John’s care and, conversely, John into Mary’s care.

By saying “Woman, behold your son,” Jesus was ensuring that his mother would be taken care of after his death. In this moment, Jesus demonstrated his deep love and concern for his mother, even while he was suffering on the cross. This exchange also highlights the importance of love, care, and compassion within the Christian community, as Jesus’ followers are called to support and look after one another in times of need.
